BYU students display furniture designs

Brigham Young University students in the School of Technology's industrial design program showed off more than 25 pieces of original furniture created as part of coursework in product design at an exhibit in the lobby of the Crabtree Technology Building.

Supervising professor Kip Christensen says furniture design gives students a chance to design and build a significant piece of furniture while learning to manipulate a variety of materials.

"These students aren't just furniture designers, they're designers -- period," said Christensen. "With their talents and the education they get at BYU, they can make anything look good -- a ski pole, a cell phone, a bed -- whatever. I'm really proud of the work they've done."

Many of the pieces will be submitted for consideration to a national furniture design competition. BYU students have historically fared well in the competition, which is sponsored by the Association of Woodworking and Furniture Suppliers, the largest national trade association representing suppliers of the home and commercial furnishing industry.
